A district in Somerset has the lowest Covid-19 rate in the UK, according to the latest figures.

Mendip has a rolling rate of 2.6, which is the lowest in the nation, while South Somerset and Somerset West and Taunton are also among the top ten areas with the lowest rates among 380 locations.

South Somerset’s rate is 3.6, while Somerset West and Taunton’s is 4.5.

This is a fraction of the UK-wide infection rate, which currently stands at 51.7 as of June 10.

Meanwhile, Sedgemoor’s rate is 11.4, North Somerset’s is 17.7 and Bath and North East Somerset’s is 18.6.

Mendip’s Covid rate paints a starkly different picture to that of Gloucester and Cheltenham, both recording rates higher than anywhere else in the South West.

Gloucester’s Covid rate currently stands at 59.6 while Cheltenham’s is 59.3.

It comes as a further 86 cases of coronavirus were reported across Somerset in the latest 24 hour period.

This compares to 44 on yesterday, 31 on Tuesday and 23 on Monday.

Of the new infections recorded North Somerset had the highest number, with 30 positive tests returned.
